About occupational therapy

The term ‘occupation’ is used to describe the things we want and need to do to participate in everyday life. As an occupational therapist (OT), you’ll play an important role in the lives of individuals and communities. You’ll work to enable participation in occupations of self-care (showering and dressing), productivity (working or schooling) and leisure (sport and play). We use a person-centred approach to work with individuals, groups and communities to achieve optimal health and wellbeing through participation in the occupations of life.

Work that works wonders

Consistent with 糖心原创’s values and mission, our occupational therapy courses emphasise the dignity of the human person and a sense of social justice and advocacy. You’ll be encouraged to adopt this mission and use it to inform the ways you contribute to individuals and communities. You’ll also complete 1,000 hours of professional practice experience in a range of settings including community engagement, simulated learning and industry clinical placements. This experience will help you to develop valuable connections, frontline experience and satisfaction from service, ensuring you’re job-ready before you graduate.

A profession in demand

According to the Australian Government’s National Skills Commission, there is currently a shortage of occupational therapists in Australia, with demand for the skills and knowledge of OTs outstripping the supply of therapists. With industry growth expected to continue, studying to become an occupational therapist gives you a range of job opportunities in Australia and overseas.

Community engagement develops your practice skills by exploring community needs. You’ll learn to respond in ways that build capacity and support your clients’ strengths. We even offer a number of international community engagement or practical placement units to give you the opportunity to gain experience in a global setting.
